So, I'm going to switch things up a bit and write about some of the books I have read. My goal for 2024 was to read 40 books, and I ended up actually reading 42. The last couple of books were super short romance stand-alone books, mainly because I didn't want to not reach my goal. I'm not going to lie; trying to read that many books was actually really hard with the last couple of months I had, but I got it done.
I like fantasy books. The Harry Potter series is one of my favorite book series, and the movies are some of my comfort movies. So, for the most part, I gravitate towards fantasy series. I love a good female lead character with a mix of romance as well.
TOP 3 books
Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas
Technically, I started the Throne of Glass series in 2023, but I finished in 2024, so I am going to put the entire series as my number 1. Throne of Glass is a book by Sarah J Maas that follows the life of Celaena Sardothien. She is a skilled assassin who was imprisoned in salt mines after being betrayed. She is given the chance to fight for her freedom when Prince Dorian and Capt. Chaol Westfall offer her a chance to compete in a life-threatening competition. If she wins, she would then become the King's Champion and, after 4 years, would be granted her freedom. The competition not only challenges her physical strength but also tests her mental state. As the series goes on, she learns many secrets of the kingdom and learns about the shadowy forces that are threatening her world. The book's main themes are power, identity, and loyalty. There's romance, action, mystery, and parts that left me in tears. I enjoyed this series because it kept me on my toes. I loved how strong-willed Celaena is and how the writing made it easy to care about the characters. I read the other series that she wrote, but ToG was, in my opinion, better than the other two.
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
This is a psychological thriller about a woman named Millie who has just been released from prison. Because she had nowhere to go and no job, she took a job as a housemaid for a wealthy family. In the beginning, everything seems fine, but little by little, things start to get strange. Millie discovers some strange things about the wife, Daphne, and quickly realizes things are not what they seem. This book had me on the edge of my seat. I thought I knew how it was going to end, but I was so insanely wrong. I believe there may be another book that follows this one, but I haven't read it. I get weird about reading thrillers because I like to read at night, but this one didn't leave me scared to be home alone or anything like that. I rated it five stars on Goodreads, which is rare for me to do.
One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
This one is a dark fantasy novel that mixes the elements of magic, mystery, and romance. The story is set in a world where certain people are cursed with "monsters" living inside them, and having magic is essentially a curse. Elspeth, the main character, has a "monster" living within her and is pretty much on a quest to rid herself of it. Throughout the book, you get introduced to West, who also has magic of his own, and they end up working together to figure out the issues in their world. The novel is full of mystery and a touch of romance but mainly focused on Elspeth's internal struggles while she tries to keep her nightmare at bay. There's a lot of world-building and some politics that kept me intrigued by the story. I enjoyed this book and the 2nd one, Two Twisted Crowns. Once I started the book, it was really hard to put it down.
