Nyx

So, we’re back. Back to writing some nonsense for random people on the internet to read.

So far 2024 has been interesting to say the least so I figure we would start with something light.

This is my puppy Nyx.

Now I have always been someone that promotes rescuing over buying but in this case getting a puppy from a responsible breeder worked best. I already have a small dog and cat so I wanted to make sure their lives weren’t going to be put in danger by bringing a rescue in.

I love big dogs and for a while now I have wanted one but wasn’t sure about the breed to get. I wanted to feel safe when I went walking and have someone to join on my car rides to the water. Being a female in today’s society is slightly scary and it’s not legal here to carry a weapon so a big scary dog was the next best thing. I grew up with larger dogs since my mom had a thing for rescuing pit bulls, rehabilitating them and rehoming to good people. We also had a multitude of other larger breeds come through our house so being able to handle them is something I am very comfortable with.

I decided on a Rottweiler because after doing some research on the breed I felt like their temperament was a good fit for my lifestyle.

Nyx was born November 20th, 2023. She was also the runt of the litter. I actually picked her because she was the runt of the litter and people are usually weird about picking the runt so I wanted to give her a good home. As of yesterday she is 4 months old and man does she have a little personality. She is super smart and picks up on tricks so insanely fast. So far she knows, sit, down, shake and Leviosa. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t teach my puppy at least one Harry Potter spell. She was pretty much house broken since she came home to me because her breeder started that training right away. What a gem right? She’s had a few accidents but honestly considering, she’s been really good. I expected her to be a little sassy pants because usually the runts have big personalities to make up for their size and boy does she! Her little facial expressions are the cutest I’ve seen. I think her having little eyebrows makes it funnier to see. Rottweilers are known to have a grumble when they are happy and play and because she was so small her little grumble sounded absolutely adorable. When she first came home and heard the other dog bark she got so scared and she ran straight over to me for safety. Something about that melted my heart because she knew I would always be her safety and that is exactly what I plan to do. Watching her grow has seriously been such a crazy experience. There are times when I put her in her crate to sleep and when I let her out in the morning she is bigger. Puppies are kind of hard but the overall experience has really helped me keep my depression in check. I saw a post on Instagram that said A glimmer is the exact opposite of a trigger—it is some kind of cue, either internal or external that brings one back to a sense of joy or safety”. I feel like she has been a glimmer for me, especially while I struggle a little bit with my mental health.

Behind her name

Naming my pets has been something I take super serious. I feel like I have to give them super cool unique names that also show the type of person I am. I already have a female tuxedo cat name Artemis. I figured it would be a cool idea to stick with goddess names so I chose Nyx. Nyx is the personification of night. She is supposed to be figure of exceptional power and beauty. I'd like to think I picked a pretty good name for her.
